Today -- the last day of Sukkot-- I was struck with a phrase...
KJV John 1:18 No man hath seen G-d at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom [chest] of the Father, he hath declared him.
1. "b'no yichido" the only begotten Son
|4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? |
Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in his garment?
Who hath established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou knowest? (Proverbs 30:4)
Yochanan 1: 18 CJB No one has ever seen G-d; but the only and unique Son, who is identical with G-d and is at the Father’s side — he has made him known.
2. Yochanon says Yeshua (Jesus) is "in the bosom of the Father..."
What does that mean?
1:18 θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε μονογενὴς θεὸς ὁ ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο
(bosom of the Father)
The Greek word Yochanan used is kolpos-- bosom [Strong's # G2859]. It has three main meanings, and each of them is instructive.
|Luk 6:38||Give 1325 , and 2532 it shall be given 1325 unto you 5213; good 2570measure 3358, pressed down 4085 , and 2532 shaken together 4531 , and 2532 running over 5240 , shall men give 1325 into 1519 your 5216bosom2859. For 1063 with the same 846 measure 3358 that 3739 ye mete withal 3354 it shall be measured 488 0 to you 5213 again 488 .|
|Luk 16:22||And 1161 it came to pass 1096 , that the beggar 4434 died 599 , and2532 was carried 667 by 5259 the angels 32 into 1519 Abraham's 11bosom2859: the rich man 4145 also 1161 2532 died 599 , and 2532 was buried 2290 ;|
|Jhn 1:18||No man 3762 hath seen 3708 God 2316 at any time 4455; the only begotten 3439 Son 5207, which 3588 is 5607 in 1519 the bosom2859 of the Father 3962, he 1565 hath declared 1834 [him].|
|Jhn 13:23||Now 1161 there was 2258 leaning 345 on 1722 Yeshua's 2424' bosom2859one 1520 of his 846 disciples 3101, whom 3739 Yeshua 2424 loved 25 .|
|Act 27:39||And 1161 when 3753 it was 1096 day 2250, they knew 1921 not 3756 the land 1093: but 1161 they discovered 2657 a certain 5100 creek2859 with2192 a shore 123, into 1519 the which 3739 they were minded 1011 , if1487 it were possible 1410 , to thrust in 1856 the ship 4143.|
Bosom means "the front of the body between the arms"

To be "in the bosom of the Father" means
to be at rest and safe
to trust each other
to be in unity
to love each other in an appropriate pure way
to be one in heart, vision, joy, and sacrifice

In the "bosom of the Father" is a place of mutual respect and trust and affection.
Kolpos also means "the bosom of a garment, i.e. the hollow formed by the upper forepart of a rather loose garment bound by a girdle or sash, used for keeping and carrying things (the fold or pocket)"
Finally, kolpos means "a bay of the sea."
(Greek: κόλποις κόλπον κόλπῳ, a gulf, bay or creek)
To have someone "in your pocket" means that you and that person work together-- that person is submitted to you.
(Greek: κόλποις κόλπον κόλπῳ, a gulf, bay or creek)
From Wikipedia "The word found in the Greek text for "bosom" is kolpos, meaning "lap" or "bay". This relates to the Second Temple period practice of reclining and eating meals in proximity to other guests, the closest of whom physically was said to lie on the bosom (chest) of the host. (See John 13:23 )"
Yeshua was "in the bosom of the Father" like a bay is part of an ocean or a sea....

A bay is an extension of an ocean.
It is hard to tell where one starts and the other stops.
They are made of the same thing.
They work together, taste the same, smell the same, have the same characteristics.
As Zab says, "Perhaps this phrase is also referring to the constant fellowship [Yeshua] had with His Father, that is, His proximity to, personal union with, and enjoyment of the Father's love.
"According to Maldonatus(1583), whose theory has since been accepted by many scholars, the metaphor "to be in Abraham's Bosom" is derived from the custom of reclining on couches at table which prevailed among the [Jewish people] during and before the time of [Messiah]. As at a feast each guest leaned on his left elbow so as to leave his right arm at liberty, and as two or more lay on the same couch, the head of one man was near the [chest] of the man who lay behind, and he was therefore said "to lie in the bosom" of the other.
It was also considered by the Jews of old a mark of special honour and favour for one to be allowed to lie in the bosom of the master of the feast (cf.John 13:23), and it is by this illustration that they pictured the next world."
Who is Yeshua? He is the one and only Son who lived and lives in constant fellowship with Avinu Hashamayim-- our Father in Heaven. He continually lived in the enjoyment of the Father's love and in personal union with Him-- except for one evening and one day for our benefit.
Now, just like Yochanan, the disciple whose identity became "the one Yeshua loved," we are invited to rest in Messiah's "bosom" and to enjoy the fellowship He has with His Father.
Yochanan 13:23 "One of his talmidim, the one Yeshua particularly loved, was reclining close beside him."
We are invited into that place of intimacy and rest.
Today is Hoshanna Rabbah-- the last day of Sukkot.

Today in history: Yeshua went to the Temple and taught. "37 Now on the last day of the festival, Hoshana Rabbah, Yeshua stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him keep coming to me and drinking! 38 Whoever puts his trust in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his inmost being!” 39 (Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who trusted in him were to receive later — the Spirit had not yet been given, because Yeshua had not yet been glorified.)
“If anyone is thirsty, let him keep coming to me and drinking! Whoever puts his trust in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his inmost being!”
The reason Yeshua could say this is because He is connected-- heart to heart-- with the G-d of Israel-- the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

"Living water" in Hebrew (mayim chaim) means waters that are flowing, moving in the same direction, waters that are "living"-- carrying life through that water to other places...
Today I will:
Actively choose to rest in the bosom of the Father through union with Messiah Yeshua. I will let His living water flow into and out through me. I will live in shalom and in submission to our Father in heaven. I will experience His love and life moment by moment as I walk through this day.
